A high domain score and strong niche relevance describe different things. The first is a tool-generated signal about a domain; the second concerns the relationship between the publication, article and intended reader. Choosing a guest post opportunity requires examining both without treating either as a guaranteed outcome.

Define relevance at the article level

A broad publication can have a strong specialist section. A niche-branded website can publish unrelated material. Read recent articles in the section where your contribution would appear, rather than deciding from the homepage name alone.

Record the reader's likely knowledge, the topics covered and the type of evidence editors use. Ask whether your proposed question extends that coverage. Relevance is more persuasive when supported by actual article examples than when reduced to a category label.

Understand the role of the metric

Ahrefs: what Domain Rating measures explains Domain Rating's backlink-profile focus. It does not establish the size or interests of the audience for an individual article. Keep the metric, its tool and its date in the research record, then examine audience evidence separately.

A large score can justify further investigation; it should not override an article that has no coherent place on the site. Equally, subject relevance does not excuse poor editorial practices, missing contact information or unclear commercial terms.

Work through a realistic choice

Consider a hypothetical company selling workflow software to dental practices. One prospect is a general technology portal; another covers practice management. The proposed article explains how to plan staff access when changing appointment systems.

The technology portal may have a suitable business-software section, so it should not be rejected automatically. The practice-management publication may understand the reader's operational context more directly. Compare the relevant sections, contribution standards and available audience data before deciding. Do not claim either option will produce more leads without evidence.

Use a reasoned shortlist

For each candidate, write a short justification covering reader fit, proposed angle, evidence and unresolved questions. You can use a simple rating internally, but preserve the notes behind it. An apparently precise weighted score can hide weak assumptions if the underlying audience data is unknown.

Before proceeding, confirm editorial approval, writing requirements, revisions and commercial link treatment. Google: qualifying outbound links explains paid-link qualification, and Google: search spam policies addresses arrangements intended to manipulate rankings. Relevance does not exempt a paid link from those rules.

Choose based on the campaign's real objective

If the goal is practitioner awareness, evaluate whether the article demonstrates useful expertise to that audience. If it is referral enquiries, check the destination page and define how enquiries will be attributed. Search performance can be observed, but should not be promised from the shortlist.

The practical answer is to prefer a defensible editorial fit with transparent terms over a metric-only decision. That may be a specialist publication or a relevant section within a broad site. The research should explain why, so the buyer is evaluating an opportunity rather than purchasing a number.
