Food Guest Posts

Recipes and stories with useful detail.

A food guest post should give readers something they can use: a clearly documented recipe, a practical technique or a well-supported explanation of an ingredient.

A food guest post should give readers something they can use: a clearly documented recipe, a practical technique or a well-supported explanation of an ingredient. The writer's available evidence should determine the format.

A recipe needs reproducible detail

“Add a little” and “cook until done” may be understandable to the recipe's creator but frustrating to a new reader. Specify quantities, equipment assumptions, portion yield and the observations that indicate each stage. If a recipe was not tested, do not label it as tested or invent a preparation time from a photograph.

When adapting another person's recipe, identify the source and explain the changes. An original photograph does not automatically make the underlying text an original contribution. Keep your notes about substitutions and results so an editor can distinguish a tried variation from a speculative suggestion.

Use an ingredient record during editing

For a hypothetical recipe submission, make one row per ingredient and record the amount, the exact product used where relevant and any variation mentioned in the article. This catches contradictions between the shopping list, method and caption. The UK Food Standards Agency's UK Food Standards Agency: allergen recipe records is an example of a structured allergen recipe record; it is a useful reference for thinking carefully about ingredient information, not a certification of a submitted article.

Do not call a recipe allergy-safe merely because an ingredient was omitted. Claims about allergens, storage or food safety need suitable verification for the intended audience and setting.

Choose a publication by cooking context

A budget family-meal article, restaurant operations piece and specialist baking tutorial serve different readers. Review the publisher's actual recipes and editing style. Ask about measurement conventions, image requirements and whether the editor wants original testing notes.

For outreach, send the recipe or angle, the audience, contributor background and available visuals. Explain who owns the photographs and whether the article has appeared elsewhere. We can discuss research and publisher coordination; the writer remains responsible for supplying accurate experience and the evidence agreed in the brief.
